The thing that makes one stand out successfully is one’s character.
What is character? The New Oxford American Dictionary defines character as the mental and moral qualities distinctive to an individual. I will add to that definition.
Character is a commitment to a set of values without compromise. It is the willingness to sacrifice pleasure for principle. Character is dedication to a set of standards without wavering. Character is self-imposed discipline and character is manifested when your values, principles, and morals are tested.
Character is tested under pressure. There are 3 things that test character: appetites, (food, drink, sex) fame and power.
Every time one’s character is proven a deposit of trust is made. Trust is a by-product of character. It cannot be bought or demanded or prayed for, it must be earned.
Trust is built over time. It may have taken 50 years to build but it can be lost in 50 seconds. Just ask Wells Fargo. Founded over 100 years ago in 1852 it recently lost its credibility due to misconduct. They are now in the process of rebuilding what they’ve lost.
Trust is the currency of leadership and it is the reason one is successful. People follow you because they trust you. You buy leadership success with the trust the people give you. Its impossible to lead those who don’t trust you. Trust is testing over time. Only you can protect the trust given to you. This done with your character and integrity.
Points to remember:
Character is what you do when no one is watching.
Character is displayed in public but tested in secret.
A person of character can be trusted.
You cannot buy, demand or pray for trust.
It is given by people in response to character.
Trustworthiness is the currency of leadership
Trust is a product of stability. The successful business/leader must be fixed, predictable, stable.
Remember Trust= Test over time.
